About multimedia digital content
Multimedia digital content is unstructured content—video, sound and images—that is not stored in traditional databases. This unstructured content can have intrinsic value, for example, film on demand, but also has commercial value, such as the management of large multimedia files, medical images and multimedia content from companies. These two operations require specially configured systems—equipment, software and services—to create multimedia digital content, manage it efficiently and securely, distribute it and then process transactions.
IBM Digital Media Factory
Grouped under the name Digital Media Factory, a panel of servers, workstations, storage solutions, middleware, applications and services use IBM technologies and an ever-growing network of technology suppliers. The IBM products are: IntelliStation Workstations, Electronic Media Management System, IBM Content Manager on DB2, WebSphere Commerce For Digital Media, IBM eServer, Total Storage solutions and IBM Global Services.
IBM Digital Media Customers
The companies that use complete multimedia digital content solutions from IBM include Cable News Network (CNN) and The Coca Cola Company, whose analog content has been digitized, organized and rethought to increase productivity and make use of existing assets to generate new revenue. IBM projects in multimedia digital content also involved cooperative research with NTT DoCoMo (Japan) for a new generation of wireless services for delivering multimedia content. For WSJ.com, as well as providing management and content integration services, IBM's e-business innovation centre in Atlanta contributed to the design of the approach and the aesthetics of the site based on in-depth studies with users. Another IBM client, satellite radio station XM Radio, uses IBM technology to store and manage its audio content. Threshold Digital Research Labs also uses IBM's Linux Digital Studio solution to create and broadcast its digital animation.
